On December 2, Basque athlete Iván Fernández Anaya was competing in a cross-country race in Burlada, Navarre. He was running second, some distance behind race leader Abel Mutai - bronze medalist in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the London Olympics.
As they entered the finishing straight, he saw the Kenyan runner - the certain winner of the race - mistakenly pull up about 10 meters before the finish, thinking he had already crossed the line.
Fernández Anaya quickly caught up with him, but instead of exploiting Mutai's mistake to speed past and claim an unlikely victory, he stayed behind and, using gestures, guided the Kenyan to the line and let him cross first.
Ivan Fernandez Anaya, a Basque runner of 24 years who is considered an athlete with a big future (champion of Spain of 5,000 meters in promise category two years ago) said after the test,
If you were to meet Nathan, you would instantly fall in love with him. Currently 5 years old, he weighs the same as the average 1-year-old at 20 pounds and is 27 inches tall, which is the length of a brand new iMac screen. Apart from his physical trials, Nathan is all personality. He lives with a rare bone condition called Osteogenesis Imperfecta (brittle bones).
It has been depressing to watch the news and search for good news stories amongst all the bad news the past little while. I finally found a few moments to myself today and happened upon a news story about Lindsey Stirling. She has taken her talent of playing the violin and turned it into something good and fun to watch.

It was so nice to destress and read about something good in the news!!
The other day I found 2 good news stories and that made me happy to find these little rays of sunshine amidst all the dark clouds of sad news.

The first article is about a family with identical twin girls that both have down syndrome and now find out they both have cancer. To make matters worse, the dad lost his job so now they are struggling to pay for all the medical bills. They decided to ask for help through an online fundraiser. They were hoping to raise $1,000-$2,000 instead good samaritans all over the world helped them raise over $25,000. That made me so happy to see total strangers willing to help out a struggling family.
Diane Aulger and Family

After overcoming a battle with stage 3 colon cancer, Mark Aulger, 52, was suddenly diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis (PF), an often-terminal scarring of the lungs that obstructs the flow of oxygen to the brain and other vital organs. At the time of Mark’s prognosis, his wife, Diane, was carrying their unborn child. On January 16, 2012, Mark’s pulmonologist estimated that Mark had only five or six days left to live.

Having surpassed 37 weeks of pregnancy, Diane’s OB/GYN determined that baby Savannah’s lungs were developed, and Diane elected to schedule an induction at 38 weeks, so Mark could see his infant daughter before his time ran out. Savannah was born on January 18, shortly before Mark slipped into a coma. Five days after Savannah’s birth, Mark passed away, holding his newborn daughter in his arms.

Three months after Mark's untimely death, Diane joined The Doctors to share her story of perseverance, hardship and lost love. Donations to help Diane and her five children can be made by clicking the DONATE NOW button below. It's nice to have good news to read about instead of all the sad and depressing news which there is plenty of!

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For a bride on her wedding day the morning is usually reserved for personal wedding preparations, getting hair beautifully coiffed and perfect makeup in place in anticipation of that trip to the altar.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But for Shannon Beasley, 35, Saturday morning began well before 6 a.m. as she joined her fiance, Colby Louis Beal, 25, for stretching and warm-up in anticipation of the open water swim, bike leg and finishing run. Makeup was replaced by beads of sweat as the pair took part in the 4th annual Daybreak Triathlon.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"It's crazy, it is definitely crazy, it may have been a bad idea," said Beasley a few days before the triathlon and wedding ceremony.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Together with close friends and family from the wedding party, the couple embarked on a 750 meter sprint swim, the 23.5K bike race and the 5K finish to the triathlon, all before the planned ceremony in the American Fork Amphitheater Saturday.
What a wonderful act of kindness!

Meghan Vogel might have won the state title for the 1600 meter race, but the track star is probably receiving more attention for her extraordinary act of kindness toward another competitor.
After winning her event on Saturday, the Ohio teen was participating in the 3200 meter race when competitor Arden McMath fell just meters from the finish line, the Springfield News-Sun reports.
Vogel soon came to her aid, carrying the fallen runner to the end of the track, where she guided her across the finish line -- ahead of herself.

The little girl was hit while crossing State Street at about 1500 South on March 14, and died the next day. As a way to help students deal with the tragedy the school organized a donation drive for her funeral expenses Friday.

On a cart, a picture of Ambrosia is surrounded by signs of caring along with buckets of spare change and envelopes filled with dollar bills. Dozens of her classmates came forward with money from their piggy banks and their pocket change to help Ambrosia's family. Parents, teachers, and students donated more than $1,000.

This was a hard article to read because I have a 6 year old and I can only imagine the heartache this poor family is going through. I was happy to see how people are reaching out to help them.
First because of what had happened to their family--first their 10 year old son passed away and then 3 months later the dad passed away. I can't even imagine the pain and sorrow their family must be going through. I've been following her blog and I was so impressed that a bunch of people in their community volunteered their time and services to completly finish their unfinished yard for them. They added special touches like a remembrance garden. This is truly Kindness in Action!
Struggle is no stranger in the life of Mandi Shaw. The 47-year-old Kearns woman has spent her life dealing with severe, debilitating birth defects. And in recent years, heart problems have rendered her permanently disabled and unable to work. She has only 20 percent of normal cardiac capacity.
In 2010, her husband died from cancer. Now, her only income is a small disability check.
Shaw is far behind on the mortgage payments on her small home of nearly 20 years, and she has little prospect of ever catching up. Cortney Shaw works two jobs to pay the mortgage for her and her mother.
I posted a couple weeks ago about a police officer who held a ladies hand after she was involved in an accident. Well, this article continues the story and tells about how the community has reached out to her family and provided Christmas for her kids.
It really touched my heart and reminded me that this is what the Christmas Spirit is all about "Loving, Caring, and Helping our fellow man or woman in any way that we can".

For nine years, West Valley police officer Kevin Peck has protected and served the citizens of his city by trying to keep the streets safe from the criminal element. But on Monday, as Peck responded to an accident scene, it wasn't with his gun or handcuffs that he served the community. Rather it was with a simple gesture of holding a hand, and providing thoughtful words and a listening ear.

Peck was just around the corner when a Utah Transit Authority bus struck 24-year-old Aryann Smith in a crosswalk, pinning her underneath the large vehicle and severely crushing both of her legs. He was one of the first officers to arrive at the scene.

As Peck assessed the situation, he quickly found out the woman had suffered severe injuries. The tall officer crawled underneath the bus himself to take the woman's pulse. But after he grabbed her hand, he didn't let go until fire crews were eventually able to lift the bus off of her and pull her out.
